Winter Fruit Compote

2 cups white grape juice
1 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
1 star anise
3 firm pears, peeled, cut into quarters
1 cup dried apricots, halved
1 cup prunes (dried plums)
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1 large navel orange, sectioned
4 whole cloves

Combine juice, water, sugar, cinnamon stick, anise, and cloves in a large saucepan.

Bring to boil over medium heat. Reduce to low and add pears, apricots, prunes and cranberries. Stir gently. Simmer, covered, for 15 to 20 minutes until pears have softened.

Remove from heat. Let stand 15 minutes to cool.

Remove and discard cinnamon, anise, and cloves.

Pour fruit mixture into a serving bowl. Add oranges and toss to mix before serving or refrigerate until serving time and add orange sections at the last minute.
